You usually don’t think much about your gutters on a dry day. Then the rain starts, one corner of the house suddenly looks like a waterfall, and you realize something up there isn’t draining properly.
So when should you have cleaned them?
For most Calgary homes, fall is the most important time for gutter cleaning. If you’re only going to do it once a year, that’s the season we’d prioritize. Spring is a good time to check them again after winter, and a major summer storm can give you another reason to take a look.
The exact schedule depends on your property. A newer home with very little tree cover may stay clear for a long time, while the house down the street with a big spruce hanging over the roof can fill up much faster.
If You Clean Your Gutters Once a Year, Make It Fall
Fall is the main cleaning season because it’s your chance to clear everything out before snow and freezing temperatures settle in.
Leaves, pine needles, dirt, and small branches can collect throughout the year. If that buildup stays in the gutter over winter, meltwater has a harder time getting through the system when temperatures move above and below freezing.
That’s especially worth thinking about in Calgary because winter doesn’t always mean everything stays frozen until spring. A Chinook can bring warmer temperatures and a surprising amount of snowmelt in a short period, which means your gutters and downspouts may still need to move water in the middle of winter.
The timing doesn’t need to be exact. Ideally, wait until most of the leaves around your property have come down, but not so long that you’re dealing with frozen gutters or the first real stretch of winter weather.
Calgary doesn’t follow the same fall schedule every year, so we’d worry less about picking a particular date and more about the goal: get the gutters clear before winter makes the job harder.
Spring Is More of a Check After Winter
Spring serves a different purpose.
Even if you cleaned the gutters in the fall, wind, snow, and ice can move debris around during the winter. Small branches can come down, pine needles can collect, and roof material can find its way into the gutters or downspouts.
That doesn’t mean every home needs another major cleaning as soon as the snow melts.
If everything was cleared thoroughly in the fall and your property doesn’t have many trees, spring may simply be a good time to check that water is moving freely. If debris is sitting in the gutter or a downspout isn’t draining properly, it’s worth cleaning.
That’s really the distinction we like to make: checking twice a year doesn’t always mean you need a full cleaning twice a year.
How Often Should Your Gutters Be Cleaned?
No single schedule works for every Calgary home.
For many properties, one thorough fall cleaning is enough. Others benefit from spring and fall service, especially when mature trees are close to the roof.
Trees are usually the biggest reason one home needs more attention than another. Deciduous trees can fill gutters quickly once the leaves start coming down, while evergreens tend to drop needles over a much longer stretch of the year.
Roof shape matters too. Valleys and sections where debris naturally collects can direct more material toward certain gutters, so you may notice that one side of the house clogs long before the rest.
If you’ve lived in the home for a while, you can usually start to see the pattern. The gutter beside the big tree may always need more attention. Another side of the house may stay nearly clear all year.
You don’t need to clean gutters perfectly clear just because the calendar says it’s time. You just want to check them often enough that a blockage doesn’t get a chance to become a problem.
Calgary’s Summer Storms Are Another Good Reason to Look
Spring and fall are the normal maintenance points, but Calgary weather doesn’t always wait for your schedule.
A strong summer storm can move a surprising amount of material around a property. Leaves, small branches, and other debris can land on the roof or collect in the gutters, especially when there are trees close to the house.
That doesn’t mean you need to book gutter cleaning after every thunderstorm. But after a significant wind or hail storm, it can be worth taking a quick look from the ground.
If water starts spilling over during the next rain, or you can suddenly see debris that wasn’t there before, you’ve got your answer.
This is one reason we think about gutter maintenance in two ways: seasonal checks and whenever the weather gives you a reason to look sooner.
Don’t Wait for the Right Season if They’re Already Overflowing
If the gutters are already showing signs of trouble, the calendar isn’t very important anymore.
Water pouring over the edge during rain is the obvious one, but there are other signs worth noticing:
- A downspout that barely seems to drain
- Water spilling from one particular section
- Leaves or plants visible above the gutter
- Water collecting close to the house
- Sagging sections
- Repeated icing around the roof edge in winter
Sometimes you’ll look up, and the gutter itself won’t seem very full. The blockage may actually be farther down inside the downspout.
A gutter can look perfectly fine from the driveway while the pipe underneath it is packed.
If water isn’t moving where it should, that’s the time to deal with it.
What Actually Happens During a Gutter Cleaning?
When we clean gutters, we do more than scoop out the leaves you can see at the top.
We remove leaves, mud, pine needles, and other debris by hand, then flush the gutters with water. We also clear and test the downspouts to make sure water can move through the system properly.
That downspout check is important. You can clean everything you see and still have drainage problems if there’s a blockage farther down.
We also look over the gutter system while we’re working. If we notice a section that isn’t draining properly, or anything else that needs attention, we’d rather let you know while we’re already there.
If checking the gutters is one of those jobs you’d rather leave to someone else, that’s where we come in. Get in touch with Pro Window Cleaning Calgary, and we’ll take care of it.
